    The cost of a driving lesson is £40 per full hour. You can find cheaper driving lessons elsewhere. However, cheaper does not mean better value for money.

    How many lessons will I need?

    Everyone learns at different rates. Some people need very few driving lessons, others need longer. I will teach you to drive in Scunthorpe and get you through your test in as many driving lessons as you need and as quickly as you can learn, this means you only pay for the driving lessons that you require, thus saving you money and time.

    Can I book more than one driving lesson at a time?

    While we don't offer a "Crash Course", you can book double or even triple lessons but it depends on availability.

    Test Preparation

    Before your driving test you will be asked two vehicle safety questions. These are also known as ‘show me, tell me’ questions. If you give the wrong answer for one or both questions, you’ll be marked with one driving fault.

    Show Me:

    The examiner will ask you one 'show me' question, you will have to show them how you’d carry out a vehicle safety check. The 'show me' questions are as follows:

  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d operate the horn?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?
  • When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

    Tell Me:

    The examiner will also ask you one 'tell me' question, where you’ll have to explain to the examiner how you’d carry out the check. The 'Tell Me' questions are as follows: (Click on a question to reveal the answer.)

    Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
    Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
    The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.
    No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
    Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
    Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

    Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.
    If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
    Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

    Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.
    Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.
    Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.

    Here are some common questions I get asked.

    Which car will I drive on my driving test?

    Your instructors car, you could use your own car, but, this should be discussed with your instructor.

    Will the Examiner ask me to put fuel in the car?

    No, this is not part of the test.

    Does the Examiner have to pass or fail so many people per month?

    No, You will only hear this from someone who has just failed their test. Rather than admit that they failed their test, they will play pass the blame.

    Will the Examiner ask me to change a wheel?

    No, this is not part of the test.

    How long will my driving test last?

    Driving exams last approximately 40 minutes

    What if I make a mistake?

    There are 3 types of faults you can make:

  • a dangerous fault - this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
  • a serious fault - something potentially dangerous
  • a driver fault - this isn’t potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault

    • You are permitted no more than 15 driver faults. Your instructor will tell you what constitutes a minor fault.

    Could my test be cancelled?

    Yes, under certain weather conditions – ice, snow, fog. Or, if your Examiner is taken ill.

    After passing your driving test

    Pass Plus

    Freedom Driving School - Scunthorpe is Pass Plus registered.

    Pass Plus courses must be taken within one year of passing your test.

    Pass Plus consists of six modules about driving in different conditions:

  • In town
  • In all weathers
  • On rural roads
  • At night
  • On dual carriageways
  • On motorways

    • On successfully completing your training you’ll be sent your Pass Plus certificate to claim your discount on your car insurance policy.

    Refresher Course

    Refresher courses are available in Scunthorpe!

    We provide a refresher course for people who have:

  • Not driven for a while
  • Been involved in a minor accident (knocked your confidence?)
  • Lost their license due to points, etc
  • Any other reason to feel unsure about driving on the road

    • If you wish these can be taken in the driving school car without any sign or ‘ L’ plates to give you confidentiality.
